African Visionary Fellowship

Our Fellowship

Local leaders at the forefront of development are not the focus of many donors’ funding, as only about 1% of global funding goes to locally-led organizations. This was reflected in an analysis of our partners’ revenue in 2017, which showed that organizations founded and led by non-Africans were growing twice as fast as those led by Africans. The two groups of organizations were not much different when it came to the thing that matters most: their ability to create positive social impact. This was unacceptable to us. 

Segal Family Foundation believes that organizations proximate to challenges are the best placed to devise sustainable solutions relevant to their local contexts – so we created the African Visionary Fellowship to disrupt this paradigm.  

Since 2017, the Fellowship has offered community, connections, and capacity to stellar proximate leaders of African organizations. African Visionary Fellows receive mentorship, exposure, and the support of a community of like-minded changemakers.
