Tharcisse Nshimirimana
Early in his career, Dr. Tharcisse Nshimirimana would receive home visits from neighbours and requests to help transport the critically ill to hospitals kilometers away. His home transformed into an emergency room where he attended to community members who could not afford proper care or access to ambulances. He would stabilize patients then rush them to the hospital in his own car with the awareness that, given the distance, many would not make it in time.
Dr. Nshimirimana eventually decided that no mother should give birth without care, no child should suffer from preventable illness, and no family should be left behind. He launched The Village Microclinic in a marginalized community on the outskirts of Bujumbura. The Village Microclinic is on a mission to deliver accessible, high-quality, and compassionate healthcare to peri-urban and underserved communities in Burundi, enabling them to live more dignified lives. What started as a two-room rental property in 2019 is now a Level 2 facility with a 20-bed capacity featuring a maternity ward, an outpatient clinic, and referrals for advanced care. The Village Microclinic’s teams of trained community health workers educate, diagnose, and map diseases in the community; Dr. Nshimirimana is responsible for the strategic direction, leadership, and operational oversight.
