Ruth Mlay

Ruth Mlay is a development practitioner with more than two decades of experience working to create social impact and empower young people. The first Tanzanian to serve as executive director of Femina Hip, she turned the organisation into a vibrant space where young people are not only seen and heard but also prepared to step into leadership within their communities and in local government. Since 2021, Ruth has guided Femina Hip beyond its traditional in-school programme to build a thriving movement powered by alumni of the organisation’s initiatives. She has been at the forefront of forming a network of more than 20,000 youth champions who challenge cultural norms, demand accountability from leaders, and are ready to take on the mantle of leadership. Together, they are pushing for a Tanzania built on justice, equality, and opportunity for all.

Ruth holds two master’s degrees – in communication as well as international development – from RMIT University in Australia. Outside her professional life, she is a mother of one and believes deeply in the power of positive parenting. For Ruth, raising healthy, thriving adults begins with parents letting go of fear and creating space for children to grow into their full potential.
